| Customer Reviews: Good Book for Advanced Bassists February 22, 2010 Sean Patterson (Atlanta, GA) I bought this several months ago and am learning Limelight. The music appears absolutely accurate. With that said though, I've found many times that when the artist fluffs a note by missing the fret a little or plays a repeated passage a little differently, the music shows a grace note or variation that extends the presentation ultimately to several pages. So some of these songs are presented as 6-8 pages of music! Once you wade through it, you realize that the actual tune is significantly shorter in terms of effort. Also, as with every music book I've used, the tablature is computer-generated and frequently does not reflect how an experienced bassist would play the tune.
Rush is not for beginners or intermediates. I've spent two complete weekends to learn this one tune about 95% so far, mainly because of the amount of memorization required for the long, non-repetitive sections. If you can play a Rush song with the recording, you are an expert bassist. So you better be very good already to make any good use of this book. Conversely, learning these tunes and playing them note-for-note with the recording is absolutely exhilarating, and makes you that much better player. So when you think you can climb Everest, this is one way up.
RUSH for dummies? October 23, 2000 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
This book is complete on every song in it. Has both the tab and staff notation. I do not know if this is common practice as most tab books I get do not have it. All in all a good buy for someone wanting to study RUSH and Geddy.
Good book on the best bass palyer in Rock!! But not perfect. August 21, 2008 Mark Harclerode (Atlanta) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
THis is the best bass tab book of Geddy Lee's amazing playing available, because unfortunately due to the short sightedness of publishers it is the only one available.
It could be perfect except for two slight problems- One- as commented previously some of the positions are wrong. Not only are they wrong, but this book tabs everything as if Geddy plays a TON of open strings. I can tell you after seeing him live several times (and playing most of his lines myself) he does not play everything in the first position using open strings. A lot of his lines are playing in the 5th position in D Major and mixolydian.
The other slight problem is this has a lot of songs that just aren't Geddy's best bass playing like Cold Fire, And Dreamline.
I heard there is possibly a long overdue Volume 2 of Rush Bass lines coming but until that time, this remains your best (and only) bet.
If you play bass and like to rock, this is a must have... February 3, 2009 Paul Wolfe (London, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
...so why only 4 stars then?
Well a couple of things. As some of the other reviewers have noted, the transcriptions aren't 100% accurate. Also the songs that have been picked come from a wide range of albums - and whoever you are, if you're a Rush fan there's bound to be a favourite song that's been omitted (for me I'd like to have seen the rest of 2112, Hemispheres - yes, Side 1 in all its glory - and maybe a couple more of the early tunes like Bastille Day or Anthem or Something for Nothing.
That apart, this is the only published volume of Geddy's bass lines with Rush (there's also the basslines of his solo album available - MY FAVOURITE HEADACHE) - so it's a good way to play along to some great Rush tunes!
One of the other reviews noted that the tab was in the wrong position, I don't know Geddy Lee's playing well enough to know whether that's the case or not - BUT, whoever put the tab positions to the music plays a lot differently than I do! I'd say play these lines, but be guided by the MUSIC, not the Tab. Make the music work for you.
But still, a must buy for any serious rock bassist. There's three tunes that if you get down will give you serious kudos with other musicians (YYZ, Free Will, esp. the solo, and La Villa Strangiato).
Enjoy.
Don't Attempt a Public Concert Based Solely on This Book May 31, 2003 Christopher C. Alsruhe (Baltimore, Maryland United States) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
Yep, if you can play this book, as cleanly and with Lee's tonal quality, you will be quite a bassist. But if you take just what's written and walk on stage with it, you might be embarrassed.Having gone through some of the music, there are errors. Sure, many might not be noticed by the audience, but an error is an error. Notes are written in the wrong octave. For instance, at times, a sequence of notes are written in the same octave, whereas Lee is clearly playing those notes more as an arpeggio through a couple scale ranges. Another example of fatal flaws can be seen in the ending measures of Tom Sawyer. I'm not sure where half the notes came from. Listen to the CD and vwala, you find you need to rewrite the music. Lee is not playing all that has been written there, and when it is what he's playing, it's out of sequence and/or not note for note. Try to play along, as I did, and you find you're playing two completely different things. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to play bass at this level. If you can play this book, you belong in the studio; but again, don't think you are getting what Lee is really playing. You often are not. If it weren't for the fact that this book is a true challenge, I would give it 1 star for its inaccuracy to the real thing.
