The musically-technical genius of Rush live for all to see October 1, 1999 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
There is no band as brilliant as Rush, and no video that displays the complex style of Rush like A Show of Hands. Though they skip many of the great songs from the first 5 or 6 albums, they do play the likes of Tom Sawyer, Spirit of Radio, La Villa Strangiato, 2112, The Big Money, In The Mood, and -- the "Flight of the Bumblebee" of rock song instrumentals -- YYZ. Rush's musical genius is obvious as you watch Geddy play bass and synthasizers at the same time, Alex do it on the guitar and foot organ, and Neil do a drum solo the likes of which haven't been seen since Ginger Baker. This is one concert video no rock fan should miss.
It's coming!!!! July 5, 2005 Patti Miller (Ohio USA) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
It has recently been announced and confirmed by Anthem that this and other Rush videos will be legitimately released on DVD this fall and early next year. They include a concert from the R30 tour filmed in Germany, Exit...Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure, and A Show of Hands. Hold on to your money and stay tuned...
its a musical cornucopia January 13, 2000 J.L.E. (Mexico, Mexico City) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Its an amazing example from the quality of Rush art. If you like progressive rock, you most have this wonderfull Rush expression for the love and commitment for its music
The next best thing... July 20, 1999 jmclain001@sprintmail.com (Dallas, Texas) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you couldn't be there, you can at least see them on tape. Being an old veteran of many a Rush tour, this was one of the better ones. This time, the band has integrated their projection screen clips into the concert itself, creating a kind of "half concert, half video" show. It is difficult to believe Geddy's accuracy on the bass until you see it. Geddy, Alex, and Neil are not just musicians, but ARTISTS. Not just talented, but GIFTED. This is a rare chance to see this special band at the summit of their career. I agree with the gentleman below, however, that the Grace Under Pressure video is of slightly better quality. But add this to your collection. You'll find yourself wearing it out. This is the greatest band in music history, playing their guts out in concert, like they always have for their fans.
Generally outstanding video representation of live Rush September 22, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This tour was definitely the best I have seen Rush do in terms of audio/video integration (the Presto tour was also incredible). Since then, the shows have placed more emphasis back on the music. As such, this video captures Rush at the dazzling peak of complexity - in terms of electronic sequences integrated with the music, etc. (Note that even when sequences are used, Rush have always maintained that they must activate them themselves, to maintain the chance for error and the integrity of the show.) An outstanding example of their onstage success tackling such difficult material is the track "Prime Mover," which is not included on the audio version of this release. And, just as in real life, the encore is when they really let it rip and you realize exactly what the phenomenon that is Rush is - at least as much as you can witnessing it in your living room. And finally, A Show of Hands also showcases some of Rush's "lighter side" - which many fans (and most critics) miss altogether - such as the obscure "catch the fish" version of Tom Sawyer, and the infamous "nuclear" objective content warning. In short, this is a must have for any Rush fan - and especially for anyone who never did quite get Rush.
