A return to their former glory days, Snakes and Arrows shows this seminal prog rock band reclaiming some of the sonic territory that they'd lost over the past few years. It's not certain what contributed to this artistic rebirth, but Rush has crafted a historical and emotional odyssey that shows many both where they've been and where they're going--from the baroque soundscapes of "The Main Monkey Business," reminiscent of their earliest work to the seductive almost folkloric urgency of "The Way the Wind Blows," which is as dangerous, anxious, and prophetic as anything that Arcade Fire or Mars Volta is doing currently. Main Lyricist Neil Peart has spent the last decade getting over the death of his wife and daughter, and those tragic events have given his songwriting more depth and gravity as he explores the strengths and limitations of faith in both metaphoric and literal detail. While never didactic or ponderous, this disc is really an instruction manual for how one conducts themselves with grace and hope through unendurable pain and the vagaries of life. Gone is much of the shrillness of their earlier incarnations--Geddy Lee's trademark high pitch shrieks have mellowed considerably and Alex Lifesong's guitar playing has an assurance and freedom that can only come with age. --Jaan Uhelszki

With songs such as "Far Cry" and "Workin' Them Angels," Rush has, with Snakes And Arrows crafted one of its finest albums of the decade and this new MVI DVD edition of the title allows you to experience the album in all its splendor. The MVI format (which works in all computers and DVD players but not in conventional CD players) allows you to hear the entire album in 5.1 surround sound (a must, especially for "Malignant Narcissism" and "Faithless"), to catch an in-depth documentary about the recording of this latest outing and extras that allow you to create your own ringtones, make wallpapers and much more. In order to fully enjoy the experience you may have to do some minor maneuvering with your stereo system or computer in order to fully appreciate what the MVI edition offers but any almost immediately proves worth the effort. Obsessives will want to buy the album in this format as it captures Rush in its true multidimensional element and everyone should own a small slice of Rush at this point in the game.--Jedd Beaudoin

5 out of 5 stars Just be Rush   June 28, 2007

Talk about a new direction for Rush - just be Rush. What an amazing album! It seems that the producer, Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver) is a Rush fan himself, and decided to just let the boys play. Funny concept for Rush: just be Rush. And when Rush is being themselves, one heck of an album emerges, grounded with excellent lyrics, awesome playing, and instrumentals! Lots of instrumentals on this disc. While Vapor Trails was a great album, this album just feels like they could be themselves. Some people may not like it, but quite frankly I think its some of their best work in years. Maybe not a good place to start for a first Rush album purchase, but definitely a great place to come to once you've listened to everything else they've produced. Well done, gentlemen, well done.

Yes, I have been a RUSH fan for over 20 years. Some reviews of their work are a bit harsh and picky. If you are a listener then you know that they have changed their style over the years. I think that's the reason they're still around aside from enjoying their craft. I have loved something about every album. My favorite is the underrated and dynamic HOLD YOUR FIRE. This new album, in my opinion, is their best in a decade. After the initial playthrough some tracks stood out more than others but eventually I was singing melodies in my head. I haven't done that in a while. The album is textured and a bit smoother than VAPOR TRAILS. The two minute guitar solo called HOPE is a treasure. THE MAIN MONKEY BUSINESS aside from having a great name is a fun and driving instrumental. FAITHLESS has flavors of GHOST OF A CHANCE and is a beautifully written song. Overall, the best power trio has graced us with another thoughtful collective work. Thanks guys.

I've been a Rush fan since 1982, the Moving Picture/Signals time frame. While I dont love all the songs on this new album, there are several great tracks on Snakes and Arrows. Its hard to believe that these guys have been make studio albums for 33 years now, and they can still produce an album of this quality. I have one gripe, though.......Why couldn't they have made Malignant Narcissism a longer song? I absolutely love it I start bouncing in my chair here at work listening on my head phones!! It needs to be longer than 2:17. But seriously, if you are a Rush fan, you'll love this new album.

One of the most admirable things about Rush is that they have been creating their own inimitable style of music since the mid-70s and "2112". They have long since been a band that does not conform to pop culture and pressures of the album charts; instead, they march to their own beat, playing the type of music that they like to play.

I gave this CD a top rating because that's what it deserves. The song composition reflects a metamorphosized Rush and a new approach, as the last 3-4 studio releases have. Overall, "Snakes and Arrows" is a testament to the survival of Rush for 30+ years, as if to say "We're still here making music". It is well-written, well-produced, and demonstrates the constant finesse that each band member contributes to the whole.

Upfront, don't expect any commercially-appealing tunes/Billboard-type songs on this album, except maybe "Far Cry". That's no longer what Rush is about and they don't ever have to be. Gone are the exhaustive 6-month periods to record albums, followed by incessant world tours. This release is more about music as art and it's obvious that Rush now takes their time creating it, for the sheer joy of the creative experience and for their fans. The Canadian power-trio of Lee/Lifeson/Peart is not afraid to try new ideas and it is blissfully evident on this CD.

"Snakes and Arrows" requires several listening sessions to get an idea of the "flavor" of it all. One thing is for certain and that's the fact that Rush has worked diligently at keeping this from being boring. Overall, there's a lot more acoustic work by Lifeson and some surprising new endeavors to include a blues-based acoustic power-strummer called "Hope" (performed solo by Lifeson), Zeppelin-esque tinged "Faithless", and a few excellent instrumental segments in "The Main Monkey Business" and "Malignant Narcissism". In addition, there were several new instruments introduced into the mix, e.g. mandolin, mandola by Lifeson and Mellotron by Lee that reflect a refreshing new approach.

It's apparent that this CD was well thought-out; I read Neil Peart's article about the making of it on his website, and it's clear that they are still strong, vibrant and creative musicians, as they will forever be. Personally, I think that 13 songs is VERY generous and many different styles of Rush are represented, always conveying the legendary virtuosity that they each possess.

Some fans may look back in retrospect and wonder, "Why can't there be another "Tom Sawyer"?" or "Where's the next "Subdivisions" on this CD?" The answer to it all is that Rush has successfully evolved from its style on every single previous album and progressed forward; there can be no turning back in the realm of creativity. As a musician, I can definitely see and appreciate that from an insider's perspective that it becomes increasingly more difficult to create material that is "avant-garde", yet true to one's style and identity. The modus operandi in all of this is "basic elemental instinct to survive", to quote from one of Rush's songs....and they have done so, splendidly.

If you are a Rush fan, you would definitely want to have this CD, simply to appreciate their latest artwork and transitory "leap" back into the "driver's seat". If you are a newcomer to the world of Rush or simply looking for well-produced (by none other than Nick "Booujze" Raskulinecz himself) virtuoso musicianship, here's also where to find it.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best LP since CounterParts.....   August 11, 2007

I've since listened to this album at least 30 times in my car on my way to work. The album starts out with some incredible guitar work with Far Cry then transitions to "armor and Sword" with some nice lee vocals then we go to "workin them Angels" another incredible song. The first 3 songs just kick it. "the Larger Bowl" a nice change of pace happy go song. Spindrift was a filler song in my opinion. But, "The Main Monkey Business" is worth buying the album just for that track...Freaking incredible GuitarWork by Lifeson!!

This new producer they have has hit a home run, it sounds clean and fresh and Positive. Rush fans do yourself a favor and buy this you won't be disappointed.
