Amazon.com Prog-rock's dominant power trio gets a worthy showcase in this DVD compilation, repeating the 1990 VHS release with minor variations and some pleasant surprises. Chronicles is aptly titled, as the videos follow Rush's 30-year evolution in fashion, performance, and visual representation. Loyalists may wish for a lengthier selection, but with remastered Dolby 2-channel stereo, this 63-minute disc clearly improves upon the VHS release. The in-studio performance of "Tom Sawyer" is new (previous versions were from the Exit, Stage Left concert video), and although hidden bonus videos of "The Enemy Within" and "Afterimage" are inaccurately listed as "previously unreleased" (they appeared on the 1985 compilation Through the Camera Eye), their inclusion here is welcome (and accessible by selecting the "Rush Chronicles" logo on the DVD's "Play Videos" menu). Also, Aimee Mann makes a playful appearance on "Time Stand Still." Recommended to Rush purists only, but on those terms, this is essential viewing. --Jeff Shannon

Great DVD But It Is Missing Alot January 17, 2003 Andy Wilson (USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
RUSH'S Chronicles is a great music video DVD. The only problem with this DVD is that it is missing alot of Rush videos. My favorite video on this disc is "THE BIG MONEY". Overall this DVD would be better if there was more videos.Tracklist: Closer To The Heart [Live 1977] The Trees [Live 1978 or 1979] Limelight [Studio Version] Tom Sawyer [Studio Version] Red Barchetta [E.S.L. Version] Subdivisons Distant Early Warning Red Sector A The Big Money [edit] Mystic Rythms Lock And Key The Hidden Videos: The Enemy Within Afterimage
Classic Rush Tunes on DVD February 1, 2006 G. Wolff (Hampton, VA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
These are not fancy videos, pretty much just studio shots of the band performing. The later songs have more of an "MTV" flavor. If you are a die-hard Rush fan who loves the old tunes, this is a must have. It also reminds you of how long these guys have been playing.

Buy it even if you already have the video! September 28, 2001 Patrick Berry (Vancouver, WA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The sound and video quality are so superior to the superior to VHS tape that it's really unfair to compair them. The videos have appearantly been completly remastered. The format is very slick and easy to use and the bonus videos (Afterimage and The Enemy Within) alone make it worth the price. Of coure I am another biased Rush fan. Hopefully Atlantic records will take note and follow Mercury's example.
Finally, a DVD from the gods of (progressive) rock March 13, 2002 Matt S. (Carbondale, IL USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This review may admittedly be a bit biased, taken from the viewpoint that I consider Rush to be without doubt the greatest band in the history of music. Yes, that's quite a statement, but have you heard these guys play? I mean really LISTENED to them? They are each phenomenal musicians and unsurpassed virtuosos on their respective instruments. That being said, I shall now rate this DVD.First of all, it must be known that the DVD is far superior to the VHS tape. The most notable improvement is that the DVD contains two songs, "The Enemy Within" and "Afterimage", not contained within the original VHS. Other improvements include the usual increase in picture clarity and sound quality that discs have over tapes. However, the sound quality is perhaps not as much improved over the VHS as one might normally think. The reason for this I can't really say, but considering that the original VHS had fairly good sound quality already, this is not that big of a point, nor is it a detriment to the DVD. The inherent reliability of discs over tapes makes this, in my mind, a good purchase for anyone even slightly interested in the band. Also, the fact that it is THIS band should remove any doubt as to its quality. Rush is well known for their tendency to strive to achieve perfection, and the songs presented here are no exception. A very good lineup is presented with old favorites such as "Tom Sawyer" and "Closer to the Heart" and less well known, though very good, tracks like "Distant Early Warning", "Lock and Key", and "Red Sector A". Some of my personal favorites that bring perhaps the greatest joy to me in viewing are "The Trees", "Subdivisions", and "Limelight". The latter, by the way, is particularly well done. Several split screens are employed in various sections of the song that allow one to see exactly what multiple parts are being played at the same time in the song by Alex and Geddy. The picture clarity and sound quality are really nicely done on this classic. The other songs on the disc are "Red Barchetta" (a very cool song), "The Big Money", "Mystic Rhythms", and "Time Stand Still" (with a guest appearance by Aimee Mann). This DVD is absolutely essential for avid Rush fans, and, in my opinion, will make a very nice addition to the DVD collection of even mild Rush fans. And, of course, any serious musician should immediately appreciate seeing the instrumental virtuosity and talents of Neil Peart (drums), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and Geddy Lee (bass guitar, synthesizers, and vocals). These guys are amazing... every one of them.
