LEGO Rock Band PS3

Amazon.com Product Description
LEGO Rock Band merges two of the most popular video game franchises to deliver a unique family-friendly music experience that will take tweens, teens, families and gamers of all ages on a wild journey to rock stardom in order to "Build a Band and Rock the Universe." Combining the authentic multiplayer music experience of Rock Band with the accessibility, customization and humor of LEGO games, LEGO Rock Band allows players to create their own unique rock star style and customize their own avatars, band members, roadies, and managers.

LEGO Rock Band game logo
Gameplay
Action in LEGO Rock Band is nearly identical to the familiar flow of Rock Band gameplay, only with a LEGO twist. Your goal is to run through a succession rock tinged family friendly song tracks with your band, consisting in multiplayer modes of up to four avatars in LEGO form controlled with guitar, bass guitar, microphone and drum controllers. The game features compatibility with most existing Rock Band and Guitar Hero instrument controllers for the appropriate platform. One of the fun LEGO influences is in the tablature flowing across the screen that directs your play. This is in the form of LEGO blocks color coded for each controller. As players successfully complete songs and rock challenges, they can collect LEGO 'studs,' with which they can customize their avatar and other in-game goodies in true LEGO Snap-On fashion. In addition, players can unlock additional content and collect amazing vehicles, which can transport their band from local gigs at rock clubs to epic stadium shows and even fantasy settings on Earth and beyond. The game contains a variety of play modes including Quickplay and Challenge, and will feature music both supplied on the game disc as well as downloadable content.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition the franchise; includes some major new features   November 9, 2009

First, let's clear one thing up and remember that you're playing along to colored notes with a fake plastic instrument, so I don't see how folks can get all upset that the LEGO tie-in makes the game more kid-like. It's charming!

This review is based on playing through the game on Hard lead guitar, with the Rock Band 1 song exports and about 200 DLC songs.

Let's start with the cons:

1. The tracklist is rather brief at 45-songs. You'll be repeating them a lot of you don't have DLC or the RB1 export. If you don't have it already, at least get the latter!
2. No online play, but the randomness of Career Mode (see below) somewhat makes up for that.
3. There appears to be a Crowd Noise volume setting bug, at least on the PS3 version. Despite lowering the crowd noise level to 0, I still hear it.

PROS:

1. Great overall presentation, with compelling and complete LEGO environments, cut scenes, and challenges.
2. Career Mode is tons of fun in that the game continually prompts you to participate in new challenges and setlists, rather than returning you to a selection screen every time. So the element of surprise is always there, as is the opportunity to simply randomly enjoy the core tracks and the DLC/exports you own.
3. The game makes good use of your DLC... for example, I had a surprise 5-song setlist thrown at me and all songs were drawn from my DLC.
4. It's fun to buy bizarre LEGO objects and decorate your band space with them.
5. Extensive stats are available for your band, including 5-starred songs, gold-starred songs, overall playing time, and many others.
6. SAVED SETLISTS. The game has you create 3-song Albums and stores them for future play. These are essentially saved setlists, an oft-requested RB feature ever since RB2 came out. Furthermore, you can edit the Album setlists in your Band Office after you unlock them.
7. SHORT SONGS. OK, this feature apparently applies only to the core game tracks, but if you're concerned that you'll be playing a bunch of songs that only half appeal to your over and over, you can use the Short Songs feature that knocks the track duration down to two minutes or so.
8. Like The Beatles: Rock Band, LRB remembers gameplay settings such as Breakneck Speed, so *you* don't have to remember to turn it on every time a la Rock Band 2.

In summary, the game provides key new features in a fun, surprising environment that allows you to enjoy the new, included songs as well as your exports/DLC in a new way. If the price drops a bit more as seems to regularly happen with LEGO-themed games, that will just make an already great title a real bargain,.

5 out of 5 stars Rock band for all ages!   November 10, 2009

I've been a fan of the Rock Band franchise since it started, and this latest inception is one of my favorites. While keeping a familiar "Rock Band" feel, this one is different enough to keep you playing for hours. There are so many fun parts to the game that Rock Band has missed in the past. One fun thing is the band challenges, where you take turns playing the song while the rest of the group can watch the video action going on behind it. For instance, at one point you have to clear out a haunted house by playing "Ghostbusters" as a team. When it's your turn to play, the rest of the group can watch the band run around in the background being chased by ghosts.

You also get the choice to customize your rock den with cool little additions you win during the gameplay. That's another thing that's fun: you get rewards all the time! New Lego minifigures, weird items, and new instruments are coming at you all the time.

The song list is a lot of fun. It's short, but you have some goodies like "You Give Love a Bad Name", "Kung Fu Fighting", and "We Will Rock You". The gameplay itself seems a lot easier than the usual "Rock Band" fare. I'm a casual player at best. I started playing on medium and was scoring 99 and 100% on every song, where I would usually score low 90's here and there in Rock Band (curse you, Metallica!). Also, the band player customization is a little weak. There aren't that many cool guitars to choose from (you start with 2 choices), though the drum sets are pretty fun. It doesn't have the customization of the usual "Rock Band", but it's still enough to give you an individual feel. As you buy more road crew members, you can choose from their parts as well.

All in all, this is a great buy and a whole lot of fun for everybody. It's a worthy addition to both the Lego franchise (after Lego Batman, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars) and Rock Band. Can't wait to see Lego Rock Band 2!

5 out of 5 stars Worth it Just for the Songs   November 23, 2009

The Lego-ized presentation of this game isn't to be everyone's cup of tea no matter how well done it is.

BUT...

If you like the song list on here you should know that for an additional $10 you can download all of the tracks from for use on Rock Band 2, just as you could with the songs from Rock Band 1. So if you like the material but prefer the look & play style of RB2 then this is still worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of the rock band series thus far!   November 15, 2009

Even though my preferred genre is metal, this game is the most fun I've had with plastic instraments in a long time! I grew up with legos as one of my favorite things top play with, now the characters come alive to a great song setlist (around 45 songs). The story (career) mode is a hoot, where at one time you have a challenge to tear down a house, or spook out some ghosts to the theme of "ghostbusters". The animation is quite amusing, and you unlock a ton of bonus extras going through the career. The notes are tiny legos also, very neat in keeping with the theme. I would recommend this for as a christmas gift before the Rock Band Beatles anyday. Must have for families who like to play music games.
